Not strictly a vegetable but useful to have at one end
of the plot. It needs a rich, fertile soil with plenty
of rotted manure worked in to the top 18". Plant crown
roots in early March, 2 feet apart and keep well
watered. Mulch with rotted manure or compost. Liquid
feed when growth begins in Spring with high nitrogen
fertiliser. Force in winter by lifting roots in November
to December and planting them in soil and peat in a warm
dark place. Plants can be forced outdoors by covering
selected crowns with buckets, boxes, etc, anything that
will stop light and keep warmth in. |
