Sweetcorn needs shelter, warmth and all the sunshine
possible. In a typically wet year the crop can be
reduced by up to 50% on poorly drained soil. Firstly dig
in well rotted manure or compost, rake in a dressing of
fertiliser 3oz/sq yard 10 days before sowing or
planting. Sow under glass during mid-April for planting
outside in late May. Sow two seeds to a pot - remove
weakest after germination. Plant out 15" apart, 24"
between rows. To provide shelter, plant behind a row of
runner beans. Plant in blocks, 3 rows wide at least to
ensure the pollen from the male flowers (situated at the
top of the plant) is carried by the wind to all female
flowers (situated between stem and leaves). This ensures
the cobs fill evenly. Tapping the male flowers lightly
when in full bloom in June/July helps spread the pollen.
Water heavily in dry weather. A mulch of compost placed
around the base of the plant will be beneficial
